Maine - Rivers/Davis Family

This post is a continuation of the previous one.

We've made several trips to Maine during your childhood, Alex & Rob.  It's one of Grammie and Grandad's favorite places (where they honeymooned in 1961, tent camping near Damariscotta).  As kids, both of them vacationed in Maine with their families.  Your Dad and I also enjoyed it and made a few trips to Maine, often staying in Brunswick the week after Thanksgiving.  Alex, when you were 11 months old your first experience with snow (very early in your toddling days!) was outside our hotel in Maine.  The state, especially the coast, is simply gorgeous.

Below is a map that shows Davis Island, for which your great, great, great grandfather (I believe!) Samuel Davis was named.  As well as St. George, which includes the lovely Tenants' Harbor.  And it shows the additional places I'm mentioning below.

In July 2022, we had our most recent Rivers family vacation in Mid-Coast Maine staying south of Cushing.  Rob, you came along with Steve and me.  We went to Friendship one morning to watch the annual lobster boat race.  After parking up the hill a ways, we walked down to the waterfront.  Unfortunately, the observation point was a fishing dock that smelled terrible (apparently lobsters like stinky bait).  We stayed just long enough for you to get a sweatshirt, Rob.  I can hardly believe it, I've just found and you can read an article about the 2022 Friendship lobster boat race.  Later in the week, as a bonus we drove up to the Augusta area so you could visit your friend Reese.

The Maine coastline has many scenic peninsulas, accessed via long, winding country roads.  One day we went up and around to the next peninsula north.  We drove the loop road to Port Clyde, stopped there and then at the Seaside Cemery in Tenants' Harbor.  Below are photos of Port Clyde's general store & dock, Tenants' Harbor and the cemetery.

Numerous David and Rivers relatives are buried here.  Rob, you'll probably remember that we walked around and found many grave stones, while Steve took pictures.  As I think Nana pointed out, several Davis and Rivers family members intermarried.  Below are graves of Aunt Ida and Uncle Weston, mentioned in GrandNana's paper (enlarged so you can read names).

I'm glad to share this history with you, I hope it's been interesting.  Many thanks to Steve for his photography!
